Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Kharijah bin Zaid narrates from his uncle Hazrat Yazid bin Thabit, who was older than Hazrat Zaid. He says that one day we went out with the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When we reached Jannat al-Baqi', there was a new grave there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired about it. The people replied, "It is the grave of such-and-such woman." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recognized her and said, "Why did you not inform me about her?" The people replied, "You yourself had said so, therefore we did not consider it appropriate to inform you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When any one of you passes away, do not make an announcement about it, but do inform me about it. Surely, my offering the funeral prayer for him is a means of mercy for him."

Ibn Aun states that Muhammad did not see any harm in a person informing relatives and friends about a funeral.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Urwah that Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) was invited to a funeral, so he passed by the mosque and was saying: "The servant of Allah has been called, so he has accepted; or the maidservant of Allah has been called, so she has accepted." Thus, only a few people from among them would stand with them.

Hazrat Abu Hayyan narrates from his father that Hazrat Amr bin Maymoon was a friend of Hazrat Rabee’ bin Khaytham. When life became difficult for Hazrat Rabee’ bin Khaytham, Hazrat Amr bin Maymoon said to his slave woman, “When he passes away, inform me.” She replied that Hazrat Rabee’ had said, “When I die, do not inform anyone about me and bury me secretly.” The narrator says that Hazrat Amr bin Maymoon spent the night on the platform of Bani Thawr until morning came, then he went to her.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hammad that Ibrahim did not consider it objectionable to inform a friend of the deceased after death. He used to say that the Companions disliked informing in the manner of the days of ignorance, that so-and-so should be informed.

Hazrat Abu Umamah bin Sahl narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to visit the sick among the poor people of Madinah and would participate in their funerals. A woman from among the people of Awali passed away. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When death comes to her, inform me." When people came to inform the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, they found him resting, and a part of the night had already passed. They disliked waking him from his sleep, and they felt fear due to the darkness of the night and the insects and creatures of the earth. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, inquired about that woman. The people said, "O Messenger of Allah! We came to inform you, but we found you asleep, so we did not think it appropriate to wake you, and the darkness of the night and the creatures of the earth frightened us. Therefore, we buried her." Upon hearing this, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, went with us, came to the grave of that woman, offered prayer over her, and recited four takbirs.
