Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Ayyub narrates that we were attending a funeral, and some of the storytellers among the people raised their voices. So Hazrat Abu Qilabah said: Those people (the Companions) used to remain silent out of respect for the deceased.

Hazrat Qais bin Abad narrates that the Companions of the Prophet preferred to lower their voices on three occasions: at the time of battle, during the recitation of the Qur'an, and at a funeral.

It is narrated in the same manner from Hazrat Qais bin Abad.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj states that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) attended a funeral, he would remain mostly silent and converse with himself.

Hasan narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked raising the voice on three occasions: at a funeral, when two armies meet, and during the recitation of the Holy Qur'an.
