Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that dates from charity (zakat) were brought to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) ate one of those dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gently scolded him and said, "Charity is not lawful for us."

Hazrat Rabi’ah bin Shihban narrates that I asked Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) what advice (warning) the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had given you and from what he had forbidden you? Hazrat Hasan replied: I once took a date from the charity dates and put it in my mouth, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Charity (food) is not lawful for us.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) found a date, so he (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: If this were not from charity, I would certainly have eaten from it.

Hazrat Ikrimah states that charity is not permissible for the Banu Hashim and for slaves.

Hazrat Abu Rafi’ narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man to the Banu Makhzum to collect charity. This man said to Hazrat Abu Rafi’, “You should come with me so that you may also receive a share from it.” He replied, “No.” Then he presented himself before the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and inquired about this matter. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Charity is not lawful for us, and the freed slaves of a people are also considered among them (they have the same ruling).”

It is narrated from Ibn Abu Mulaykah that Khalid bin Sa‘id sent a cow given as charity (zakat) to Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), but she returned it saying: "We are the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); charity is not lawful for us."

Hazrat Salman narrates that I collected some firewood and, after selling it, brought the profit to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and presented it to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is this?" I replied, "Charity." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told his companions, "Eat," but he himself did not partake of it.

Hazrat Ata bin Saib narrates that I brought some charity to Hazrat Umm Kulthum bint Ali (may Allah be pleased with her), but she returned it and said that Hazrat Mehran, who was a servant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), narrated to me that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Charity is not lawful for us, the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the slaves of the tribe are also included among us.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrates from his father that I was with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the house of charity (where charity goods were kept), when Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came and picked up a date. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it back from him and said: Charity is not permissible for us.

Hazrat Yazid bin Hayan narrates that I and Hazrat Husain bin Uqbah went to the service of Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him). We both asked him, "Who are the people from the Ahl al-Bayt? Are their women also included among the Ahl al-Bayt?" He replied, "Their women are also from the Ahl al-Bayt. But the Ahl al-Bayt are those upon whom charity was later made unlawful." Hazrat Husain asked, "Who are they?" He replied, "The family of Abbas, the family of Ali, the family of Ja'far, and the family of Aqil are among them." Hazrat Husain then asked, "Is charity forbidden for them?" He replied, "Yes."

It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit bin Al-Hajjaj that two persons from Banu Abdul Muttalib came to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him for charity. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused them and said, "When you know that wealth from the khums has come to me, then come to me (I will give you a share from it)."

Hazrat Mujahid says that charity is not permissible for the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). For them, there is a fifth of the fifth.

It is narrated from Hazrat Rasheed bin Malik that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Charity is not lawful for us.
