Those who hold that i'tikaf is not valid without fasting
Hadith 9875
٩٨٧٥ - حدثنا (هشيم) (١) عن عمرو بن دينار عن أبي فاختة عن ابن عباس قال: المعتكف عليه الصوم (٢).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said that fasting is obligatory for the person observing i'tikaf.
Hadith 9876
٩٨٧٦ - حدثنا حاتم بن إسماعيل عن جعفر عن أبيه عن علي قال: لا اعتكاف إلا بصوم (١).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that there is no i'tikaf without fasting.
Hadith 9877
٩٨٧٧ - [حدثنا حفص عن ليث عن الحكم عن (مقسم) (١) عن ابن عباس وعائشة قالا: لا اعتكاف إلا بصوم] (٢) وقال علي وابن مسعود: ليس عليه صوم إلا أن يفرضه هو على نفسه (٣).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) state that i'tikaf is not valid without fasting. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud state that fasting is not obligatory for it until one makes it obligatory upon oneself.
Hadith 9878
٩٨٧٨ - حدثنا وكيع عن ابن أبي ليلى عن الحكم عن مقسم عن ابن عباس قال: لا اعتكاف إلا بصوم (١).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says that there is no i'tikaf without fasting.
Hadith 9879
٩٨٧٩ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن حبيب عن عطاء عن عائشة بمثله (١).
It is similarly narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).
Hadith 9880
٩٨٨٠ - حدثنا ابن علية عن ليث عن الحكم عن علي وعبد اللَّه (قالا) (١): المعتكف ليس عليه صوم إلا أن (يشترط) (٢) ذلك على نفسه (٣).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud say that fasting is not obligatory upon him until he himself makes it obligatory upon himself.
Hadith 9881
٩٨٨١ - حدثنا ابن علية عن ليث عن طاوس عن ابن عباس قال: الصوم عليه واجب (١).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said that fasting is obligatory for the person observing i'tikaf.
Hadith 9882
٩٨٨٢ - حدثنا وكيع عن هشام بن عروة عن أبيه قال: لا اعتكاف إلا بصوم.
Hazrat Urwah says that there is no i'tikaf without fasting.
Hadith 9883
٩٨٨٣ - حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن مغيرة عن إبراهيم قال: لم يكن يرى اعتكافًا إلا بصوم.
Ibrahim says that there is no i'tikaf without fasting.
Hadith 9884
٩٨٨٤ - حدثنا وكيع عن هشام الدستوائي (١) عن يحيى بن أبي كثير عن عكرمة قال: قال: (٢) على المعتكف الصوم (وإن) (٣) لم يفرضه على نفسه.
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that it is necessary for the person observing i'tikaf to fast, even if he has not made it obligatory upon himself.
Hadith 9885
٩٨٨٥ - حدثنا عبدة بن سليمان عن سعيد عن أبي معشر عن [إبراهيم قال: ليس عليه صوم إلا (أن) (١) يكون أوجب ذلك على نفسه.
Ibrahim says that fasting is not obligatory for the person observing i'tikaf until he makes it obligatory upon himself.
Hadith 9886
٩٨٨٦ - حدثنا عبدة عن سعيد عن] (١) قتادة عن الحسن بمثل قول إبراهيم.
It is narrated similarly through another chain.
Hadith 9887
٩٨٨٧ - حدثنا وكيع عن إسرائيل عن جابر عن عامر قال: لا اعتكاف إلا بصوم (١).
Hazrat Aamir says that there is no I'tikaf without fasting.
