Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas narrates that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck one of his hands on the other and said, “A month is like this, a month is like this.” Then, the third time, he kept one finger less.

Hazrat Umar narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed away from his wives for a month. When twenty-nine days had passed, Hazrat Jibreel came and said, "The month has passed and you have fulfilled your oath."

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that once the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "How many days of the month have passed?" We said, "Twenty-two days have passed and eight remain." The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No, rather twenty-two days have passed and seven days remain. Seek it in the night." Then the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A month is like this, a month is like this." He said this three times and paused once.

Hazrat Jabir narrates that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took an oath not to go to his wives for a month and went to an upper room. When twenty-nine days had passed, Hazrat Jibreel appeared and said, "A month has passed, please come down."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We are an unlettered nation; we neither write nor calculate. The month is like this, like this, and like this. On the third time, he folded his thumb (i.e., counted up to twenty-nine). Then he said: The month is like this, like this, and like this. This time, he counted up to thirty.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said that a month is like this, like this, and like this. The third time, he did not count his thumb. That is, he counted up to twenty-nine.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took an oath of abstention from his wives for a month and went to his upper chamber. Then he came down after twenty-nine days. The people said, "O Messenger of Allah! You had taken an oath for a month?" He replied, "A month can also be of twenty-nine days."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that a month consists of twenty-nine days. Then he fully opened both his hands twice, and the third time kept his thumb closed. When Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) heard the narration of Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), she said, "May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdur Rahman. In fact, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had left his wives for a month. He returned after twenty-nine days, so the people said, 'O Messenger of Allah! You had taken an oath of separation for a month.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'A month is sometimes twenty-nine days.'"

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that some months are of twenty-nine days and some are of thirty days.

Hazrat Umar said that sometimes a month is of thirty days and sometimes of twenty-nine days.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah says that Ramadan is of twenty-nine days.

Hazrat Waleed bin Utbah says that during the time of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), we fasted for twenty-eight days in Ramadan without sighting the moon. On the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, he ordered us to make up one fast.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that we have observed at least twenty-nine and at most thirty fasts in Ramadan.
