Fasting on the Day of Doubt: Is it permissible?
Hadith 9742
٩٧٤٢ - حدثنا حفص عن (مجالد) (١) عن عامر قال: كان علي وعمر ينهيان عن صوم (اليوم) (٢) الذي يشك فيه من رمضان (٣).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Umar used to forbid fasting on the day about which there is doubt whether it is a day of Ramadan or not.
Hadith 9743
٩٧٤٣ - حدثنا وكيع عن أبي الضريس عن عبد الرحمن بن (عابس) (١) عن أبيه (قال) (٢): قال عبد اللَّه: لئن أفطر يومًا من رمضان ثم أقضيه أحب إليّ من أن أزيد فيه ما ليس (منه) (٣) (٤).
Hazrat Abdullah says that if I miss a fast of Ramadan and make it up later, this is more preferable to me than adding a day to Ramadan which does not belong to it.
Hadith 9744
٩٧٤٤ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن عبد العريز بن حكيم (١) قال سمعت ابن عمر (يقول) (٢): لو صمت السنة كلها لأفطرت اليوم الذي يشك فيه (٣).
Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that even if I were to fast the whole year, I would not fast on the day about which I have doubt whether it is a Ramadan fast or not.
Hadith 9745
٩٧٤٥ - حدثنا حفص وعلي بن مسهر عن الشيباني عن الشعبي قال: قال الضحاك بن قيس: لو صمت السنة كلها (ما) (١) صمت اليوم الذي يشك فيه [من رمضان (٢).
Hazrat Dhuhaak bin Qais says that even if I fast for the whole year, I will not fast on the day about which I am doubtful whether it is a Ramadan fast or not.
Hadith 9746
٩٧٤٦ - حدثنا عبد اللَّه بن إدريس عن الشيباني عن مولاة لسلمة (١) بنت حذيفة (عن بنت حذيفة) (٢) قالت: كان حذيفة ينهى عن صوم (اليوم) (٣) الذي يشك فيه] (٤) (٥).
Hazrat bint Huzayfah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that Hazrat Huzayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to forbid fasting on the Day of Doubt.
Hadith 9747
٩٧٤٧ - حدثنا وكيع عن مهدي بن ميمون عن ابن سيرين قال: أصبحنا يومًا بالبصرة ولسنا ندري على ما نحن فيه من صومنا في اليوم الذي يشك فيه، فأتينا أنس ابن مالك فإذا هو قد أخذ (حريرة) (١) كان يأخذها قبل أن (يغدو) (٢) ثم (غدا) (٣)، ثم أتيت أبا السوار (٤) (العتكي) (٥) فدعا (بغدائه) (٦) (ثم تغدى) (٧)، ثم أتيت مسلم ابن (يسار) (٨) فوجدته مفطرًا (٩).
Hazrat Muhammad bin Sirin says that we were in Medina and on the 30th of Sha'ban we faced the day of doubt, about which it could not be said with certainty whether it was a day of fasting or not. So we went to Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he was eating a dish called Khazirah, which he used to eat before the midday meal. Then all the people present there ate the food. Then I went to Abu Sawar Adawi, he also had his food brought and ate it. Then I went to Hazrat Muslim bin Yasar and saw that he was also not fasting.
Hadith 9748
٩٧٤٨ - حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن مغيرة عن إبراهيم والشعبي أنهما قالا: لا تصم إلا مع جماعة الناس.
Ibrahim and Hazrat Sha'bi say that observe the fast along with the congregation of the people.
Hadith 9749
٩٧٤٩ - حدثنا وكيع عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد عن الشعبي قال: ما من يوم أصومه أبغض (إليَّ) (١) من يوم (يختلف) (٢) الناس فيه.
Hazrat Sha'bi says that I dislike fasting on the day about which there is doubt as much as I do not dislike fasting on any other day.
Hadith 9750
٩٧٥٠ - حدثنا وكيع عن مسعر عن امرأة منهم يقال لها حفصة عن بنت أو أخت لحذيفة قالت: كان حذيفة ينهى عن صوم (اليوم) (١) الذي يشك فيه (٢).
Hazrat Hafsah bint Huzayfah (may Allah be pleased with her) or Hazrat Hafsah, the sister of Huzayfah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates that Hazrat Huzayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prohibit fasting on the Day of Doubt.
Hadith 9751
٩٧٥١ - حدثنا وكيع عن (أبي) (١) العيزار قال: أتيت إبراهيم في اليوم الذي يشك فيه (فقال) (٢): لعلك صائم، لا تصم إلا مع الجماعة.
Hazrat Abu Aizar says that I went to Ibrahim on the Day of Doubt. He said, "Perhaps you are fasting." Fast with the congregation.
Hadith 9752
٩٧٥٢ - حدثنا وكيع عن داود بن قيس قال: قلت للقاسم: أتكره صوم آخر يوم (من) (١) شعبان الذي يلي رمضان؛ قال: لا، إلا أن (يغم) (٢) الهلال.
Hazrat Dawood bin Qais says that I asked Hazrat Qasim, "Do you dislike fasting on the last day of Sha'ban which is joined with Ramadan?" He replied, "No, except if the moon is hidden by clouds, then it is not appropriate."
Hadith 9753
٩٧٥٣ - حدثنا حفص عن عمرو عن الحسن قال: كان يصومه فيما بينه وبين نصف النهار لشهادة شاهد أو مجيء غائب، فإن جاء وإلا أفطر.
Hazrat Amr says that Hasan would fast on the 30th of Sha'ban until midday while waiting for a witness or someone to arrive; if no one came, he would break the fast.
Hadith 9754
٩٧٥٤ - حدثنا أبو داود عن شعبة عن أبي (المعلى) (١) عن سعيد بن جبير أنه كان يكره (أن) (٢) يصوم اليوم الذي يختلف فيه من رمضان.
Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair considered fasting on the Day of Doubt to be disliked (makruh).
Hadith 9755
٩٧٥٥ - حدثنا عبد العزيز بن عبد الصمد العمي عن (منصور عن ربعي) (١) أن عمار ابن ياسر وناسًا معه أتوهم (بمسلوخة) (٢) مشوية في اليوم الذي يشك فيه أنه (من) (٣) رمضان أو ليس من رمضان، فاجتمعوا واعتزلهم رجل، فقال له عمار: تعال فكل، قال: فإني صائم، فقال له عمار: إن كنت تؤمن باللَّه و (اليوم) (٤) الآخر فتعال فكل (٥).
Hazrat Rubayyi states that on the Day of Doubt, roasted meat was brought to Hazrat Ammar bin Yasir and the people present with him. Everyone gathered around it, but one man sat apart. Hazrat Ammar said to him, "Come and eat." He replied, "I am fasting." Hazrat Ammar said to him, "If you believe in Allah and the Last Day, then come and eat."
Hadith 9756
٩٧٥٦ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن سماك عن عكرمة قال: من صام (اليوم) (١) الذي يشك فيه فقد عصى رسول ﷺ (٢)
Hazrat Ikrimah says that whoever fasted on the Day of Doubt has disobeyed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
Hadith 9757
٩٧٥٧ - حدثنا ابن فضيل عن بيان عن عامر قال: ما من يوم أبغض إليّ أن أصومه من اليوم الذي يشك فيه من رمضان.
Hazrat Aamir says that there is no day more disliked to me for fasting than the Day of Doubt.
Hadith 9758
٩٧٥٨ - حدثنا ابن فضيل عن مطرف [عن عامر في اليوم (الذي) (١) يقول الناس (فيه) (٢) (إنه) (٣) من رمضان فقال: لا تصومنّ إلا مع الإمام فإنما كانت أول الفرقة في مثل هذا.
Hazrat Aamir was asked about fasting on the Day of Doubt, so he said: "Fast only on the day about which everyone says that it is a day of Ramadan. Because the foundation of disagreements is laid by such matters."
Hadith 9759
٩٧٥٩ - حدثنا ابن فضيل عن العلاء بن المسيب (عن إبراهيم) (١) أنه قال: ما من يوم أبغض إليّ (٢) أن أصومه من اليوم الذي يشك فيه من رمضان.
Ibrahim says that there is no day more disliked by me for fasting than the Day of Doubt.
Hadith 9760
٩٧٦٠ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون] (١) عن عاصم عن أبي عثمان قال: قال عمر: (ليتق) (٢) أحدكم أن يصوم يومًا من شعبان أو يفطر يومًا من رمضان، (قال) (٣) (فإن) (٤) (تقدم) (٥) قبل الناس (فليفطر) (٦) إذا أفطر الناس (٧).
Hazrat Umar says: Refrain from fasting on any day of Sha'ban thinking it to be Ramadan, and do not miss the fast of any day of Ramadan. Even if you begin fasting before the people, celebrate Eid with the people.
Hadith 9761
٩٧٦١ - حدثنا يزيد عن عاصم عن أبي عثمان أنه كان يصوم (اليوم) (١) الذي يشك فيه من رمضان.
Hazrat Abu Uthman used to fast on the Day of Doubt.
