Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Amr bin Muhajir narrates that Muhammad bin Suwaid Fahri celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid-ul-Adha one day before the people. Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz wrote him a letter asking the reason for this, so Muhammad wrote back that Hizam bin Hakeem Qureshi testified before me that he had seen the moon. Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz wrote him a letter saying, "On the testimony of one man? Can he be equal to two men?"

Hazrat Abdul Kareem narrates that during the time of Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz, people testified to having seen the moon during the day, saying that they had seen the moon the previous night. Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz said that whoever has not eaten should complete the fast, and whoever has eaten should refrain from eating and drinking for the rest of the day.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj says that I asked Hazrat Ata: If some people of Makkah begin the morning not fasting, or one or two people begin the morning not fasting, and then after some time someone comes and says that the moon was sighted last night, and this news reaches them in the early or late part of the day, should they fast for the rest of the day or make up this fast later? He replied: If they wish, they may continue eating and drinking; it is not obligatory for them to fast for the rest of the day.
