Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Ishaq says that I saw the Eid moon at the time of Zuhr. Upon this, some people broke their fast. We went to Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned the whole matter to him. He said, "I will complete this fast until night."

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that if the moon is sighted during the day, do not break the fast until you see it at the time when it is usually sighted.

Hazrat Zabraqan says that people broke their fast after seeing the moon during the day. I went to Hazrat Abu Wa'il and said that I have seen the moon during the day. He recited this verse of the Holy Qur'an { أَتِمُّوا الصِّیَامَ إلَی اللَّیْلِ } "Complete the fast till the night."

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Harmalah says that people saw the moon after the sunlight had diminished. Upon this, some people broke their fast. I mentioned this to Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib, and he said that during the time of Hazrat Usman, people had also broken their fast after seeing the moon during the day. Upon this, Hazrat Usman said that he would complete his fast. Abdur Rahman bin Harmalah said that during the time of Marwan, once the moon was also seen during the day and some people broke their fast. Marwan spoke harshly to those who broke their fast and reprimanded them. Hazrat Saeed said that Marwan did the right thing.

Hazrat Abdullah says that if you see the moon during the day, do not break your fast because the place where the moon moves is in the sky; it is possible that it has just appeared at that time.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that if you see the moon in the early part of the day, do not break the fast, and if you see it in the latter part of the day, then break the fast.

Hazrat Rakeen's father narrates that we were at the place of Balanjar with Hazrat Salman bin Rabee'ah. On the twenty-ninth of Ramadan, at the time of forenoon, we saw the crescent of Shawwal. Hazrat Salman said, "Show it to me as well." I showed him the crescent, so he ordered the people to break their fast.

Hazrat Salih Dahan narrates that once, on the last day of Ramadan at noon, the moon was sighted. Upon seeing the moon, people became engaged in eating and drinking. At that time, a group from Azd was sitting in i'tikaf. They said, "O Salih! Go as our messenger to Jabir bin Zaid." I went to him and mentioned the whole matter. He asked, "Did you also see the moon?" I replied, "Yes." He asked, "Did you see it in front of the sun or behind the sun?" I said, "I saw it in front of the sun." Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid said, "Your today is a day of Ramadan; you have seen the moon in its orbit. Instruct your companions to complete their fast and i'tikaf."

Ibrahim narrates that Hazrat Utbah bin Farqad was hiding in the villages. People saw the moon at the end of the day and broke their fast. This news reached Hazrat Umar, so he wrote a letter in which he said: If the moon is seen at the beginning of the neck (early evening), then it is the moon of the previous day; you may break your fast upon it. But if the moon is seen at the end of the day, then it is the moon of the coming day; in this case, complete your fast.

Hazrat Ata used to say that if the crescent of Shawwal is sighted during the day, do not break the fast (i.e., do not eat or drink). Then he would recite this verse { ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّیَامَ إلَی اللَّیْلِ } then complete the fast till night.

Hazrat Hasan bin Ubaidullah says that I saw the Shawwal moon before midday; I informed Hazrat Abu Burdah about this, so he instructed me to complete the fast.

Hazrat Abu Wa'il says that we were at the place of Khanqin when a letter from Hazrat Umar came to us, in which it was written that some moons are larger than others. When you see the moon during the day, do not break the fast until two Muslims testify that they saw the moon the previous day.
