Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: None of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts a day before it or a day after it.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hazrat Juwayriya bint Harith on a Friday. She was fasting. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her, "Did you fast yesterday?" She replied, "No." He asked, "Do you intend to fast tomorrow?" She replied, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then break your fast."

Hazrat Junadah Azdi says that eight of us from the tribe of Azd came to the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him) on Friday. All of us were fasting. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had food brought and placed before us, so we said that we were fasting. He asked, "Did you fast yesterday?" We replied, "No." He asked, "Will you fast tomorrow?" We replied, "No." Then he said, "Break your fast." Then he went for the Friday prayer. When he sat on the pulpit, he asked for water and drank it. People were watching him. In fact, he wanted to show them that he (peace be upon him) did not fast on Fridays.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), son of Abu Talib, says that if any of you wishes to observe a voluntary fast in any month, then he should fast on Thursday and not on Friday, because Friday is a day of eating, drinking, and remembrance. By fasting on Friday, a person combines two virtuous days: one being the day of fasting and the other being the day of eating and drinking with the Muslims.

Hazrat Qais bin Sakan narrates that some students of Hazrat Abdullah visited Hazrat Abu Dharr on a Friday, and all of them were fasting. Hazrat Abu Dharr said to them, "I urge you by oath to break your fast, because this Friday is actually a day of Eid."

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that do not fast on Friday with the specific intention of honoring that day.

Hazrat Abu Huraira says that none of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts a day before or a day after as well.

Hazrat Sha'bi has declared it disliked to fast specifically on Friday.

Ibrahim says that the predecessors considered it disliked to fast on Friday so that the Friday prayer could be performed with full strength.

Hazrat Abu Ayyub Atki narrates that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hazrat Juwayriya bint Harith on a Friday. She was fasting. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her, "Did you fast yesterday?" She replied, "No." He asked, "Do you intend to fast tomorrow?" She replied, "No." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then break your fast."

Hazrat Ziyad Harithi narrates that once a man said to Hazrat Abu Hurairah, "Are you the one who forbids fasting on the day of Friday?" Hazrat Abu Hurairah replied, "By the Lord of this sanctity, or by the Lord of this building, that is, the Ka'bah! I have not forbidden it, rather Muhammad (peace be upon him) has forbidden it."
