Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Sufyan was asked about a man who was present at home at the time of the sun's decline, then set out on a journey; how should he perform the prayer? He replied that if he prays during the time of Zuhr, he should perform two rak'ahs. Hasan bin Salih says that when the sun declines here, then on the journey he should perform four rak'ahs. Sufyan, regarding a traveler who joins the prayer with a resident and prays one rak'ah with him, then sees something and talks, and in the meantime the imam completes the prayer, says that the traveler should repeat two rak'ahs and then return to the original ruling. Hasan says that he should perform four rak'ahs because he has made four rak'ahs obligatory upon himself.

8862 - Hasan ibn Salih said: When the sun passes (for him) (1) from here, he prays four (rak‘ahs) while traveling.

8863 - Sufyan said regarding a traveler who entered with a resident and prayed one rak‘ah with him, then saw something and spoke, then the imam prayed: the traveler repeats two rak‘ahs, then (returns) (1) to the original state he was upon.

8864 - Al-Hasan ibn Salih said: He prays four because he has made it obligatory upon himself.

Hazrat Sufyan was asked: If a man joined the congregation with the Imam on Friday, then he had a nosebleed, and when he returned after performing ablution, the Imam had completed the prayer, but he had not spoken to anyone—what should he do? Hazrat Sufyan replied that he should pray two rak‘ahs like the Imam’s prayer. Hazrat Hasan bin Salih says that he should pray four rak‘ahs, but if he had performed one rak‘ah with the Imam, then he should pray two rak‘ahs.

8866 - And (al-Hasan) (1) ibn Salih said: He prays four unless he has prayed a rak‘ah with him.
