Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ata says that two men became junub (in a state requiring ritual purification). Both performed tayammum and offered prayer. Later, both found water within the prayer time. One of them repeated the prayer, while the other was content with his previous prayer. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: The one who repeated the prayer will have double reward, and the other's prayer is also valid.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a person should wait until the last time for prayer; if he finds water, he should perform ablution, and if he does not find water, he should perform tayammum and offer the prayer. If he finds water after offering the prayer, he should perform ghusl but should not repeat the prayer.

Hazrat Abu Salamah says that he will not repeat the prayer.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that if a person performed tayammum, then offered prayer, and then entered the city during the time of prayer, he will not repeat the prayer.

Ibrahim says that when a person performed tayammum and offered prayer, and after completing the prayer he found water, then he has completed his prayer.

Hazrat Mujahid says that he will not repeat the prayer; his prayer is valid.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib and Hazrat Sha’bi state that if a person performed prayer facing a direction other than the Qiblah, or prayed after performing tayammum, or prayed while there was blood on his clothes, or prayed in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), and then during or after the prayer time he found water, it is not obligatory for him to repeat the prayer.

Hasan says that if a person finds water, he should perform ghusl, and if he wishes, he may repeat the prayer, and if he wishes, he may not.

Hazrat Hakam bin Aban narrates that Hazrat Ikrimah was with a group and I was with another group. Hazrat Ikrimah’s group did not have water, so they performed tayammum and offered prayer. Then, when they reached the place where there was water, Hazrat Ikrimah said to them, “Do you see the sun over the mountains?” The people replied, “No.” Hazrat Ikrimah said, “Even if you had seen the sun, we would not repeat the prayer because tayammum is sufficient for us.” Then, when I reached the place of Jund, I met Amr bin Muslim, a student of Hazrat Tawus. I mentioned Hazrat Ikrimah’s statement to him, so he went to Hazrat Tawus and mentioned this to him. Then he returned to me and informed me that he had mentioned Ikrimah’s statement to Hazrat Tawus, and he said, “He speaks the truth.”

Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that I was on a journey for Hajj or Umrah, when the last part of the night came, I became junub (in a state requiring ritual purification). We did not have any water, so I performed tayammum and offered the prayer. When the time of Duha (forenoon) came, a man said, "O Abu Bakr! Did you repeat your prayer?" He replied, "If I do not find water for even twenty years, will I repeat the prayer?"
