Yawning During Prayer
Hadith 8195
٨١٩٥ - [حدثنا أبو بكر قال: ثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن سهيل بن أبي صالح عن (ابن) (١) أبي سعيد الخدري عن أبيه قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إذا (تثاءب) (٢) أحدكم في الصلاة فليكظم ما استطاع فإن الشيطان يدخل" (٣).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any of you yawns during prayer, he should try to restrain it, because Satan enters the mouth through it.
Hadith 8196
٨١٩٦ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن أبي (فزارة) (١) العبسي عن يزيد بن الأصم قال: ما (تثاءب) (٢) رسول اللَّه ﷺ في الصلاة قط] (٣) (٤).
Hazrat Yazid bin Asam states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never yawned during prayer.
Hadith 8197
٨١٩٧ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا سفيان عن منصور (عن) (١) هلال بن يساف عن عطاء عن ابن عباس قال: إذا (تثاءب) (٢) أحدكم في الصلاة فليضع يده على فيه (٣). - بمثل حديث سفيان (٤).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that when any of you yawns during prayer, he should place his hand over his mouth.
Hadith 8198
٨١٩٨ - حدثنا (عبدة) (١) عن سعيد عن قتادة عن (خلاس) (٢) عن علي قال: التثاؤب في الصلاة من الشيطان، وشدة العطاس والنعاس (عند) (٣) الموعظة (٤).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that yawning during prayer, excessive sneezing during admonition, and feeling sleepy are from Satan.
Hadith 8199
٨١٩٩ - حدثنا محمد بن فضيل عن يزيد (عن) (١) (أبي) (٢) ظبيان عن ابن مسعود قال: التثاؤب في الصلاة والعطاس من الشيطان (فتعوذوا) (٣) باللَّه منه (٤).
Hazrat Ibn Masood says that yawning and sneezing during prayer is from Satan; seek Allah's refuge from it.
Hadith 8200
٨٢٠٠ - حدثنا هشيم عن مغيرة عن إبراهيم قال: إني لأدفع التثاؤب في الصلاة بالتنحنح.
Ibrahim says that during prayer, I suppress yawning by clearing my throat.
Hadith 8201
٨٢٠١ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا سفيان عن منصور عن إبراهيم قال: إذا (تثاءب) (١) في الصلاة ضم شفتيه ومسح (أنفه) (٢).
Ibrahim says that when someone yawns during prayer, he should press his lips together and touch his nose with his hand.
Hadith 8202
٨٢٠٢ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا سفيان عن الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن عبد الرحمن ابن يزيد قال: نبئت أن للشيطان قارورة يشمها القوم في الصلاة كي (يتثاءبوا) (١).
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Yazid says that Satan has a bottle which he makes people smell in order to make them yawn.
Hadith 8203
٨٢٠٣ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا الربيع عن أبي معشر عن إبراهيم قال: يرد الرجل التثاوب في الصلاة ما استطاع فإن غلبه وضع يده على فيه.
Ibrahim says that as much as possible, a person should suppress yawning during prayer; if it is not possible to suppress it, then he should place his hand over his mouth.
Hadith 8204
٨٢٠٤ - حدثنا وكيع عن إسرائيل عن جابر عن أبي جعفر قال: التثاؤب في الصلاة من الشيطان.
Hazrat Abu Ja'far says that yawning during prayer is from Satan.
Hadith 8205
٨٢٠٥ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن عبد الرحمن بن يزيد قال: إن للشيطان قارورة فيها نفوخ، فإذا قاموا إلى الصلاة انتشقوها، فأمروا عند ذلك بالاستنثار.
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Yazid narrates that Satan has a bottle; when people stand for prayer, he makes them smell it. That is why it has been commanded to clean the nose before prayer.
Hadith 8206
٨٢٠٦ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا أبو معشر عن سعيد (المقبري) (١) عن أبي هريرة قال: إن اللَّه يكره التثاؤب ويحب العطاس في الصلاة (٢).
Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that Allah Almighty dislikes yawning in prayer and likes sneezing.
Hadith 8207
٨٢٠٧ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا سفيان عن عثمان بن الأسود عن مجاهد قال: إذا (تثاءب) (١) في الصلاة فليمسك عن القراءة.
Hazrat Mujahid says that when any of you yawns during prayer, he should stop reciting.
Hadith 8208
٨٢٠٨ - حدثنا أبو خالد وليس بالأحمر عن جرير بن حازم عن يعلى بن حكيم عن عكرمة قال: إذا (تثاءب) (١) أحدكم وهو يقرأ فليمسك عن القراءة.
Hazrat Ikrimah says that when any of you yawns while reciting, he should stop reciting.
