Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Umair bin Hani narrates that when Hajjaj bin Yusuf had besieged Hazrat Ibn Zubair, at that time the house of Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) was situated between Hajjaj and Hazrat Ibn Zubair. He would sometimes perform prayer with Hazrat Ibn Zubair and sometimes with Hajjaj.

Hazrat Ja'far narrates from his father that Hazrat Hasan and Hazrat Husayn used to pray behind Marwan. Someone asked them, "Did your father not go home and repeat the prayer?" They replied, "No, by Allah! He would not add anything to the prayer of the imams."

Ibrahim says: The predecessors used to pray behind the imams, whoever they may have been.

Hasan says that a believer suffers no harm by praying behind a hypocrite, and a hypocrite gains no benefit by praying behind a believer.

Hazrat Habib bin Jari says that I asked Hazrat Abu Ja'far about performing prayer behind the rulers, so he replied: Perform prayer with them.

Hazrat Ja'far bin Burqan says that I asked Hazrat Maymun about praying behind the rulers, so he said: Pray with them.

Hazrat Ja'far bin Burqan says that I asked Hazrat Maymun whether it is permissible to pray behind a Khariji. He replied, "You are not praying for him; you are praying for Allah. We used to pray behind Hajjaj. He was an Azraqi Haruri."

Ibrahim says that even if the imams delayed the prayer from its appointed time, Abdullah would still pray with them and would say that its sin is upon them.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair used to stand near the gates of Kindah and offer prayers behind Hajjaj, and then he would leave from there.

Hazrat Bassam says that I asked Hazrat Abu Ja'far whether prayer should be performed behind the Imams. He replied, "Pray with them, because we also pray with them. Hazrat Hasan and Hazrat Husayn used to pray behind Marwan." I said to him, "People think that this was 'taqiyyah' (dissimulation)." He replied, "How can that be? Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to criticize Marwan openly on the pulpit in front of him, until he became the governor."

Hazrat Ibrahim bin Abi Hafsah narrates that I said to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Hussain that Abu Hamzah Thumali is an extremist person and he says that we will not pray behind the Imams and we will not marry anyone whose opinion does not match our opinion. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Hussain replied that we do pray behind them and we also marry them according to the Sunnah.

Hazrat A'mash says that the predecessors used to pray behind the rulers and considered this prayer to be valid.

Hazrat Abu Wa'il used to offer Friday prayers with Mukhtar.

Hazrat Muslim Abu Furwah says that I saw Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila gesture to Muhammad bin Sa’d to remain silent during Hajjaj’s sermon.

Hazrat Qasim bin Mukhaymarah used to offer prayers behind Hajjaj.
