Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abbas bin Abdur Rahman Hashimi narrates that the practice of applying saffron-based fragrance in mosques began in this way: Once, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw spit on the floor of the mosque. He ordered it to be cleaned and then said that saffron-based fragrance should be applied to that spot. After that, people started applying saffron-based fragrance in mosques.

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw spit on the qibla side of the mosque, so he scraped it off with his hand and had perfume mixed with saffron brought and applied it. Hazrat 'Amir says that applying perfume made with saffron in mosques is a Sunnah.

Hazrat Abu Najeeh narrates that when Hazrat Ibn Zubair rebuilt the Ka'bah, he sprinkled musk-infused water on its walls.

Hazrat Urwah narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that mosques be made in homes and that they be kept clean and fragrant.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Hazrat Umar used to have incense of aloeswood burned in the mosque every Friday.

Sulaiman says that I saw Hazrat Ibrahim applying perfume mixed with saffron in the mosque; he did not consider there to be any harm in it.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) scraped off the spit that was on the Qibla side of the mosque.

Hazrat Yahya bin Kathir narrates that Hazrat Abu Darda saw spit on the wall of the mosque, so he scraped it off.
