Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night prayer is in sets of two rak'ahs. When you fear the approach of dawn, then pray one rak'ah.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform one rak'ah of Witr, and he would speak between the two rak'ahs and the one rak'ah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night prayer is in sets of two rak'ahs. Witr is one rak'ah. And before the Fajr prayer, there are two prostrations.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the Tahajjud prayer. The Prophet replied: "The night prayer is offered in pairs of two rak'ahs. When you fear that dawn is about to break, then pray one rak'ah as witr."

Hazrat Bakr bin Abdullah narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) offered two rak'ahs and made salam, then said, "Bring my such-and-such she-camel here." After that, he stood up and performed one rak'ah of witr.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the night prayer is in sets of two rak‘ahs, and witr is one rak‘ah.

Hazrat Mus'ab bin Sa'd narrates that his father used to perform one rak'ah of Witr. Someone asked him about this, so he replied that he had shortened it.

Hazrat Ata says that Hazrat Muawiyah prayed one rak'ah of Witr, so people disliked this action of his. Regarding this, Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) was asked, so he said that he acted upon the Sunnah.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin narrates that Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud and Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with them) conversed with Walid bin Uqbah at night, then they came out together while talking to each other. When morning came, each of them performed one rak'ah.

Hazrat Jarir bin Hazim says that I asked Hazrat Ata whether I can perform one rak'ah of Witr. He replied, "Yes, if you wish."

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that the family members of Hazrat Sa'd and Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say salam after two rak'ahs of Witr and then perform one rak'ah of Witr.

Ibn Aun narrates that Hasan used to offer two rak'ahs of Witr and then would say salam.

Hazrat Saeed and Hazrat Nafi say that we saw Hazrat Mu'adh al-Qari ending the prayer with salam after two rak'ahs of Witr.

Hazrat Laith says that Hazrat Abu Bakr performed one rak‘ah of Witr.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that Hazrat Nailah bint al-Farafisah Kalbiyah said that the rebels either martyred Hazrat Uthman or left him; he used to stay awake the whole night and would recite the entire Holy Qur'an in one rak'ah. Hazrat Nailah bint al-Farafisah meant to say that this was the single rak'ah of Witr.
