Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not pray behind one who is sleeping or one who is talking.

Hazrat Mujahid narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade praying behind people who are sleeping and those who are engaged in conversation.

Hazrat Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Harith narrates that I was sitting with Hazrat Humaid bin Abdur Rahman. He turned around and saw a man praying behind him. He said to him, "Either you change your place or I will get up from here."

Hazrat Ibn Masood considered it undesirable to pray behind those who engage in conversation.

Hazrat Abdullah says: Do not pray behind those people who are talking or engaging in idle talk.

Hazrat Maymun states that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would not pray behind any person, except on Friday, who was not performing the prayer. I mentioned this matter to Hazrat Abdul Kareem, so he said that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would also not pray behind a person who was talking during the Friday prayer, except on Friday, if he was not performing the prayer.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that when people are engaged in conversation about the remembrance of Allah, there is no harm in performing prayer facing towards them.

Hazrat Mujahid says that, in my view, praying behind someone who is sitting is better than praying behind someone who is asleep.

Hazrat Tawus considered it undesirable to pray behind a sleeping person.
