Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: People should refrain from raising their eyes towards the sky during prayer, otherwise it is possible that their sight may not return.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "What is the matter with people that they raise their eyes towards the sky during prayer?" He strongly disapproved of this, to the extent that he said: "They should refrain from doing so, lest their eyesight be taken away."

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I fear for the one who raises his eyes towards the sky during prayer, lest his eyesight be taken away.

Hazrat Abdullah says that those who raise their eyes towards the sky during prayer should refrain from doing so, lest their eyesight be taken away.

Hazrat Abdullah saw a man who had raised his gaze towards the sky during prayer. He said, "Does he know that his eyesight could be taken away before it returns?"

Hazrat Shurayh saw a man who had raised his gaze and hand towards the sky during prayer. He said, "Lower your hand and cast down your gaze, for you can neither see Him nor grasp Him."

Hazrat Ibn Sirin narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his gaze and look at things during prayer. Until this verse was revealed: { الَّذِینَ ہُمْ فِی صَلاَتِہِمْ خَاشِعُونَ } Those who are humble in their prayers. After its revelation, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lowered his head.
