Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said twelve takbirs in the Eid prayer: seven in the first rak'ah and five in the second rak'ah.

Abu Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who was a companion of Abu Huraira, narrates: I was with Saeed bin Aas. He invited Abu Musa Ash'ari and Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked them about the Takbeerat of the two Eids. Abu Musa said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say four Takbeers in the Eid prayers, just like in the funeral prayer. Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) confirmed this. Abu Musa said that when I was the governor of Basra, I also used to lead the Eid prayer in the same manner. Abu Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I was present in that gathering and I remember Abu Musa's statement very well: Four Takbeers, just like in the funeral prayer.

Hazrat Mak’hool narrates that a person who had seen Sa’eed bin Aas told me that once Sa’eed bin Aas called four of those companions who had pledged allegiance under the tree (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Sa’eed bin Aas asked them about the Eid takbeers, so they informed him that there are eight takbeers. The narrator says that I mentioned this to Ibn Sireen, so he said that they spoke correctly, except that they omitted the takbeer-e-tahreema.

Hazrat Masruq says that Hazrat Abdullah used to teach us nine takbeers for the Eid prayers: five in the first rak'ah and four in the second rak'ah. He used to join the recitations of both.

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that Hazrat Abdullah used to say nine takbeers for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha: five in the first rak'ah and four in the second, and he used to join the recitations of both.

Hazrat Harith narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say eleven takbeers in the Eid al-Fitr prayer: six in the first rak'ah and five in the second rak'ah. He would begin both rak'ahs with recitation. In Eid al-Adha, he used to say five takbeers: three in the first rak'ah and two in the last rak'ah. He would begin both rak'ahs with recitation.

Hazrat Ata says that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say the takbeer thirteen times.

Hazrat Ata says that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited the takbeers thirteen times in the Eid prayer: seven times in the first rak'ah and six times in the second rak'ah.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that Hazrat Abu Hurairah said seven takbeers in the first rak'ah and five takbeers in the second rak'ah; all of them were before the recitation.

Hazrat Ata states that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) pronounced seven takbirs in the first rak'ah of the Eid prayer including the takbir-e-tahrima, and six takbirs in the second rak'ah including the takbir for ruku; all these additional takbirs were before the recitation.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Walid bin Uqbah invited Ibn Mas’ud, Abu Mas’ud, Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with them), and Abu Musa Ash’ari on the night of Eid and asked them, “Tomorrow is Eid, how should the Takbirs be recited?” Abdullah (Ibn Mas’ud) replied, “You should say four Takbirs in standing (qiyam), then recite Surah Al-Fatihah and any surah from the Mufassal which is neither too long nor too short, then perform ruku’. Then, in the standing (qiyam), recite (again), and when you finish the recitation, say four Takbirs, and on the fourth Takbir, go into ruku’.”

Kurdoos narrates that Hazrat Saeed bin Aas, at the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah, called Hazrat Abdullah, Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Abu Masood Ansari, and Hazrat Abu Musa Ashari and asked them about the Takbeerat of Eid. All of them entrusted this matter to Hazrat Abdullah, so he said: Say Takbeer while standing, then say Takbeer, then say Takbeer, then after saying Takbeer, recite (Qira'at), then say Takbeer and go into Ruku, then in the next Rak'ah, after standing up, recite (Qira'at), then say Takbeer, then say Takbeer, then say Takbeer, then after saying Takbeer, go into Ruku.

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib say that there are a total of nine takbeers. Also, the recitation of both rak'ahs will be combined and the prayer will be performed.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Harith narrates that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) led us in the Eid prayer with nine takbeers: five takbeers in the first rak'ah and four in the second rak'ah, and he combined both recitations.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that Ziyad sent a message to Masruq and called him, and said, "We have many tasks, please tell us about the Takbeerat of Eid." He replied, "There are nine Takbeerat in Eid: five in the first rak'ah and four in the second rak'ah. Join the recitations of both, that is, there should be no extra Takbeer between the two recitations."

Ibrahim narrates that Hazrat Aswad and Hazrat Masruq used to say nine takbeers in the Eid prayer.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Sirin states that Hazrat Anas used to say nine takbirs in Eid. Then he narrated a hadith similar to that of Hazrat Abdullah.

Ibrahim narrates that the students of Abdullah used to say nine takbirs in the Eid prayers.

Hazrat Abu Qilabah says regarding the Takbeerat of the two Eids that they are nine each.

Hazrat Jabir narrates that Hazrat Abu Ja'far used to issue a fatwa regarding the Takbeerat of the two Eids according to the statement of Hazrat Abdullah.

Hazrat Mak'hool says regarding the Takbeerat of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr that there are seven and five Takbeerat, and all are before the recitation; there will be no Takbeer between the recitations.

Hasan and Muhammad held the view of nine takbirs in Eid.

Hazrat Yahya bin Ya'mar used to say nine takbeers in one Eid and eleven takbeers in the other.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Rafi’ says that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab used to say twelve takbirs in the Eid prayers: seven in the first rak’ah and five in the second rak’ah.

Hazrat Abdul Aziz bin Umar narrates about his father that he used to say seven and five takbeers in the Eid prayer, seven in the first rak'ah and five in the second rak'ah.

Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri says that there are five and seven takbeers in the two Eids: seven in the first rak'ah before the recitation, and five in the second rak'ah before the recitation.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that there are seven and five takbeers in the two Eids.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Hilal narrates that I heard Salim bin Abdullah and Ubaidullah bin Abdullah instructing the governor of Madinah, Abdur Rahman bin Dhahhak, on the day of Eid al-Fitr to say seven takbeers in the first rak'ah and then recite Surah Al-A'la, and to say five takbeers in the second rak'ah and recite Surah Al-'Alaq.

Thabit bin Qais narrates that I offered the Eid al-Fitr prayer behind Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz; in the first rak'ah, before the recitation, he would say seven takbeers, and in the second rak'ah, before the recitation, he would say five takbeers.

Hazrat Ammar bin Abi Ammar narrates that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said twelve takbeers in the Eid prayer: seven in the first rak'ah and five in the second rak'ah.

Hazrat Sha'bi and Hazrat Musayyib state that in the Eid prayers, nine takbeers used to be said: five in the first rak'ah and four in the second rak'ah. There is no takbeer between the two recitations.
