Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam says that previously people used to perform the Eid prayer first and then deliver the sermon, until the time of Hazrat Umar when the number of people increased. When he would begin to deliver the sermon, people from here and there would slip away. When Hazrat Umar observed this situation, he started delivering the sermon first and then leading the prayer.

Hazrat Raja narrates that Marwan had the pulpit brought out and he delivered the sermon before the prayer. A man stood up and said, "O Marwan! You have acted against the Sunnah; you had the pulpit brought out even though the pulpit was never brought out before, and you delivered the sermon before the prayer." On this occasion, Abu Saeed said, "Who is this?" People informed him that it was so-and-so. He said, "He has fulfilled his responsibility."

Tariq bin Shihab narrates that Marwan was the first to deliver the sermon before the Eid prayer. At this, a man stood up and said that the prayer comes before the sermon. Marwan said that it has been left here like this. Upon this, Hazrat Abu Saeed said that this man has fulfilled his responsibility.
