Hazrat Zuhri says that raising hands for supplication on the day of Jumu'ah is an innovation (bid'ah).

Muhammad says that the first person to raise his hands in supplication on Friday was Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Ma'mar.

Hazrat Tawus disliked the manner in which people supplicated on Fridays and did not raise his hands.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Murrah narrates that once the Imam raised his hands for supplication on the pulpit on Friday, so the people also raised their hands. Hazrat Masrooq said, "What has happened to them! May Allah cut off their hands."

Hazrat Amarah bin Ruwaybah says that he saw Bishr bin Marwan raising his hands so much in supplication that it was quite possible he might fall backward.

Hazrat Ammarah bin Ruwaybah saw Bishr bin Marwan standing on the pulpit raising both his hands. Upon seeing this, he said, "May Allah destroy these two hands. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that during the sermon he would only gesture like this." Saying this, he gestured with his index finger to show how.
