Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ghusl (ritual bath) on Friday is obligatory upon every adult.

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara bin Azib that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is obligatory upon Muslims to perform ghusl (ritual bath) on the day of Friday. If they have perfume, they should apply it, and if they do not have perfume, then water is a perfume for them.

Hazrat Aws bin Aws Thaqafi narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever takes a bath on Friday, goes early to the prayer, walks and does not ride, sits near the Imam, listens to the sermon, and does not engage in any idle activity during the sermon, will be granted the reward of fasting and praying for one year for every step he takes.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever comes for Jumu'ah should perform ghusl (ritual bath).

It is narrated similarly through another chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is obligatory for every Muslim to perform ghusl (ritual bath) once in seven days, and that day is Friday.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ghusl is required on four occasions: after janabah, after cupping, after washing a deceased person, and the Friday ghusl.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that my beloved friend advised me to perform ghusl (ritual bath) on the day of Friday.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab was delivering the sermon on Friday when a man came. Seeing him, Hazrat Umar said, "What is it that keeps you from the prayer?" The man said, "As soon as I heard the call to prayer, I performed ablution." Hazrat Umar said, "Ablution? Did you not hear the blessed saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that when any of you goes for Friday (prayer), he should perform ghusl (full ritual bath)?"

A companion narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Three things are necessary for every Muslim: performing ghusl on Friday, using the miswak, and applying perfume if he has it.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Harith narrates that I was with Hazrat Saad when one of his sons came. He asked him, "Have you performed ghusl (ritual bath)?" He replied, "No, I have come after performing wudu (ablution)." Hazrat Saad said to him, "I do not think that anyone can leave the ghusl of Jumu'ah (Friday)."

Ibn Sirin reports that a man from among the Muhajirun came for prayer on Friday. Umar asked him, "Have you performed ghusl?" He replied, "No." Umar inquired, "Do you not know what we have been commanded regarding Friday?" He said, "What have you been commanded?" Umar replied, "Ghusl." Then he said, "You are a leader for the Muhajirun people." The man said, "I did not know."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) has also narrated this incident.

Hazrat Abu Bakhtari narrates that Hazrat Ammar had a dispute and argument with a man over some matter. When the argument intensified, Hazrat Ammar said, "If this is not the case, then I am more foul-smelling than the person who does not perform ghusl (ritual bath) on Friday."

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about performing ghusl (ritual bath) on Friday. He replied: Perform ghusl on Friday, on the days of the two Eids, and on the day of Arafah.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that I do not think that anyone considers anything other than ghusl (ritual bath) as a means of purification on the day of Jumu'ah (Friday).

Hazrat Abu Hurairah says that if I have to buy a bowl of water for one dinar, I will still perform ghusl on Friday.

Hazrat Ka'b says that on the day of Friday, everything except humans and jinn is fearful of Allah's punishment. And on this day, bathing is obligatory upon every adult.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that people used to do their work and in the same condition would come for the Friday prayer, therefore they were commanded to perform ghusl (ritual bath) on the day of Friday.

Hazrat Jabir narrates that it is obligatory for every Muslim to perform ghusl (ritual bath) once in seven days, and that day is Friday.

Hazrat Umar said about a certain thing that it is more evil than the person who does not perform ghusl on the day of Jumu'ah.

Ibrahim says that the predecessors considered taking a bath on Friday to be recommended.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Sa’d narrates that whenever Hazrat Umar had to take an oath about something, he would say, “In that case, I would be worse than the person who does not perform ghusl on Friday.”

Hazrat Abu Usamah says that I asked Hazrat Yahya bin Maisarah about the ritual bath (ghusl) on Friday, whether performing ghusl on Friday is a Sunnah (obligatory)? He replied that Muslims used to perform ghusl on Fridays. I asked the same question again, and he gave me the same answer, that Muslims used to perform ghusl on Fridays. I understood that performing ghusl on Friday is recommended (mustahabb), not obligatory.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrates that on the day of Jumu'ah, the day of Eid al-Adha, the day of Eid al-Fitr, the day of Arafah, and the day of entering Makkah, ghusl (ritual bath) should be performed.

Ibrahim says that the predecessors used to like that when they were in the cities, they would not neglect the Friday bath.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever intends to go for Jumu'ah should perform ghusl (ritual bath).

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair used to perform ghusl (ritual bath) on Fridays even during the days of imprisonment.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Sabaq that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said in a Friday sermon: "This is the day of Eid, so perform ghusl (ritual bath) on this day. Whoever has perfume, there is no harm for him in applying it. It is obligatory upon you to use the miswak (tooth-stick)."

Hazrat Ibn Mughaffal says that there is (prescribed) bathing for the day of Friday, and (using) perfume if it is available.

Hazrat Yazid says that I asked Hazrat Abdur Rahman whether bathing on any day other than Friday is also a part of the religion? He replied, yes, on Eid al-Adha, Eid al-Fitr, and the Day of Arafah.

Ibrahim Taimi narrates that his father considered performing ghusl (ritual bath) on the days of Eid and Jumu'ah to be recommended (mustahabb).

Hazrat Abdullah says that performing ghusl (ritual bath) on Friday is Sunnah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in a Friday sermon that whoever comes for Jumu'ah should perform ghusl (ritual bath).
