Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the morning prayer. Most likely, it was the Fajr prayer. When he completed the prayer, he said, "Has anyone among you recited (something)?" A man said, "I have recited." The Prophet said, "I was also wondering who was disputing with me in the Qur'an!"

Hazrat Imran bin Husain narrates that one day the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Zuhr prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said, "Did anyone recite Surah Al-A'la?" A man said, "I did." The Prophet said, "I had realized that someone was disputing with me."

Hazrat Abdullah narrates that we used to recite (the Qur'an) behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he forbade us by saying: "You mix up the Qur'an over me."

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has an imam, the recitation of the imam is his recitation."

Hazrat Abu Wa'il says that a man came to Hazrat Abdullah and asked, "Can I recite (Qira'at) behind the Imam?" He replied, "There is an engagement in prayer, and the responsibility of that engagement has been taken by the Imam."

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever recites (Qur'an) behind the Imam has rebelled against nature.

Hazrat Saad says that I wish there were a burning ember in the mouth of the one who recites (Qur'an) behind the Imam.

Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit says that there is no recitation behind the Imam.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the recitation of the Imam is sufficient for you.

Hazrat Aswad says that the imam about whom I know that he is reciting, I consider it better to hold a burning coal in my mouth than to recite behind him.

Hazrat Jabir says: Do not recite (Qur'an) behind the Imam.

Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit says that whether the Imam is reciting aloud or in a low voice, do not recite (Qur'an) behind him.

Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit says that whoever recites (Qur'an) behind the Imam, his prayer is not valid.

Hazrat Aswad bin Yazid says that whoever recites (Qur'an) behind the Imam, I wish that his mouth be filled with dust.

It is narrated similarly through another chain of transmission.

Hazrat Abu Haroon says that I asked Abu Saeed about reciting (Qur'an) behind the Imam, so he replied that the recitation of the Imam is sufficient for you.

Hazrat Abu Bishr says that I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair about reciting (Qur'an) behind the Imam, so he replied that there is no recitation behind the Imam.

Hazrat Ibn Musayyib says that remain silent behind the Imam.

Muhammad says that in my opinion, reciting behind the Imam is not Sunnah.

Ibrahim considered reciting behind the imam to be disliked and said that the imam’s recitation is sufficient for you.

Hazrat Waleed bin Qais narrates that I asked Hazrat Suwaid bin Ghaflah whether I should recite (Qira'at) behind the Imam in the Zuhr and Asr prayers. He replied, "No."

Hazrat Dhahhak used to prohibit reciting (Qur'an) behind the Imam.

Hazrat Malik bin Amarah says that I do not know how many students of Hazrat Abdullah used to say that there will be no recitation behind the Imam. Among them is Amr bin Maymoon as well.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The Imam is appointed so that he may be followed; when he says the takbeer, you should also say the takbeer, and when he recites (the Qur'an), you should remain silent.

Ibrahim says that the person who recites (Qur'an) behind the Imam is one who opposes (the Imam).

Hazrat Abu Wa'il says that the recitation of the Imam is sufficient for you.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever has an imam, the recitation of the imam is sufficient for him.
