Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Tawus says that if a person misses a rak‘ah with the imam in a loud (jahr) prayer, then while making it up, he may recite aloud if he wishes, or he may not if he wishes.

Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz says that perform the remaining prayer in the same manner as the Imam performs it.

It is narrated similarly through another chain of transmission.

Hazrat Amr says that Ubaid bin Umair missed one rak'ah of Maghrib, and I heard him reciting Surah Al-Lail in that rak'ah.

Ibrahim says that the predecessors considered it preferable that if a person misses some part of the Fajr, Maghrib, or Isha prayer, then while making up those parts, he should recite aloud, so that the uninformed may know that recitation is done in the remaining part of the prayer.

Hasan, regarding the person who prays the Maghrib prayer alone, says that he will make his recitation audible to his own ears.

Hazrat Ayyub bin Najeeh says that I was with Saeed bin Jubair. We went for the Maghrib prayer and missed one rak'ah. When Hazrat Saeed stood up to make up that rak'ah, he recited Surah At-Takathur.
