Beautification of mosques and its rulings
Hadith 3175
٣١٧٥ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا إسماعيل بن علية عن أيوب عن الحسن قالوا: لما بني المسجد قالوا: يا رسول اللَّه كيف نبنيه؟ قال: "عَرْشٌ كعَرْشِ مُوسَى" (١).
Hasan narrates that when the Prophet’s Mosque was being constructed, the companions asked, "O Messenger of Allah! How should we build it?" He replied, "Build it like Moses’ canopy."
Hadith 3176
٣١٧٦ - حدثنا ابن علية عن أيوب قال: حدثني رجل عن أنس بن مالك قال: كان يقال: ليأتين على الناس زمان يبنون المساجد يتباهون بها ولا يعمرونها إلا قليلًا (١).
Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a time will come upon the people when they will build mosques and take pride in them, but there will be very little congregation in the mosques.
Hadith 3177
٣١٧٧ - [حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن أبي فزارة عن يزيد بن الأصم قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "مَا أمَرْث بَتشييدِ المْسَاَجدِ" (١)] (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Yazid bin Asam that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I have not been commanded to raise the buildings of mosques high.
Hadith 3178
٣١٧٨ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن أبي (فزارة) (١) عن يزيد بن الأصم عن ابن عباس قال: لَتزَخِرفَنَّهَا كَمَا زَخْرَفَت الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى (٢).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that you will adorn the mosques in the same way that the Jews and Christians decorate their places of worship.
Hadith 3179
٣١٧٩ - حدثنا أبو خالد الأحمر عن محمد بن عجلان عن سعيد بن أبي سعيد قال: قال أُبيٌ: إذا زوقتم مساجدكم، وحليتم مصاحفكم فالدبار عليكم (١).
Hazrat Abi says that when you begin to decorate your mosques and adorn your Qur'ans with embellishments, then destruction will become your destiny.
Hadith 3180
٣١٨٠ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن أبي فزارة عن مسلم البطين قال: مر (عليٌّ) (١) على مسجد قد شرف فقال: هذه بيعة بني فلان.
Hazrat Abu Fazarah narrates that Hazrat Muslim Batīn passed by a decorated and adorned mosque, so he said, "Is this the 'church' of such-and-such people?!"
Hadith 3181
٣١٨١ - حدثنا ابن علية عن الجريري قال: قال عبد اللَّه بن شقيق: إنما كانت (المساجد) (١) جُمًّا، وإنما (شرف) (٢) الناس (حديثا من الدهر) (٣).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Shaqiq says that mosques used to be without ventilators, now these ventilators and niches that people have made are new things of the new era.
Hadith 3182
٣١٨٢ - حدثنا خلف بن خليفة عن موسى عن رجل عن ابن عباس قال: أمرنا أن نبني المساجد جُمًّا والمدائن شرفًا (١).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that we have been commanded to build mosques without ventilators and niches, and to build cities with ventilators and niches.
Hadith 3183
٣١٨٣ - حدثنا ابن فضيل عن ليث عن يزيد بن الأصم عن ابن عباس قال: لتزخرفن مساجدكم كما زخرفت اليهود والنصارى مساجدهم (١).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that you will adorn your mosques in the same way that the Jews and Christians decorate their places of worship.
Hadith 3184
٣١٨٤ - حدثنا مالك بن إسماعيل قال: حدثنا هريم عن ليث عن أيوب عن أنس قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "ابْنُوا المْسَاجِدِ وَاتَّخِذُوها جُمًّا" (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Build mosques and keep them free from ventilators and niches.
Hadith 3185
٣١٨٥ - حدثنا مالك قال: نا هريم قال: نا ليث عن مجاهد عن ابن عمر قال: نهينا أو نهانا أن نصلي في مسجد مشرف (١).
Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from building mosques with niches.
