Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Qasim bin Mukhaimara says that Hazrat Alqama once held my hand and said that Hazrat Abdullah had held my hand and said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) held my hand and taught me these words of Tashahhud: All verbal worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.

Hazrat Abdullah says that we used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and we used to say: Peace be upon Allah before His servants, peace be upon Jibreel, peace be upon Mikaeel, peace be upon so-and-so and so-and-so. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, he said: Allah is Peace. When any of you sits in prayer, he should say: All verbal worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah’s servant and His Messenger.

It is narrated similarly through another chain of transmission.

Hazrat Abdullah says that when we used to sit in prayer behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to say: Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibreel, peace be upon Mikaeel, peace be upon so-and-so and so-and-so. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said: Allah is As-Salaam (the Source of Peace). When any of you sits in prayer, he should say: All verbal worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. When you have done this, you have sent peace upon every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me the Tashahhud while my hand was in the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He taught me the words of Tashahhud just as he would teach us a surah from the Holy Qur'an. The words were as follows: All verbal worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. These were the words as long as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in this world. When he passed away, instead of saying "As-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu," we used to say "As-salamu 'ala an-nabiyyi."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us these words of Tashahhud: All verbal acts of worship, physical acts of worship, and financial acts of worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah’s servant and His Messenger.

Hazrat Abu Musa narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any of you sits in the Qa'dah (sitting posture of prayer), he should say: All verbal worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: With the name of Allah, with Allah, all verbal acts of worship and physical acts of worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you. Peace be upon us as well and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I ask Allah Almighty for Paradise and seek refuge from Hell.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Hazrat Abu Bakr used to teach the words of Tashahhud from the pulpit in the same way as children are taught. Those words were: All verbal worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and I bear witness that Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah’s servant and His Messenger.

Hazrat Abu Al-Mutawakkil says that we asked Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri about the method of Tashahhud, so he said the words of Tashahhud are as follows: All verbal worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and may Allah's mercy and blessings descend upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah's servant and His Messenger. After this, Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri said that we used to write nothing except the Qur'an and the Tashahhud.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abd al-Qari says that I saw Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) teaching the tashahhud on the pulpit. Its words were: All verbal worship, all pure worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and may Allah’s mercy and blessings descend upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah’s servant and His Messenger.

Hazrat Qasim bin Muhammad says that I saw Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) counting with her hands while saying: All verbal acts of worship, physical acts of worship, financial acts of worship, and all pure acts of worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah’s servant and His Messenger. After saying this in prayer, a person may supplicate for whatever he wishes for himself.

Hazrat Habib bin Shaheed says that Muhammad was asked about the words of Tashahhud, so he replied that the words of Tashahhud are: All verbal worship, physical worship, and financial worship are for Allah. Then he said that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to add "al-barakat" (the blessings) to them.

Ibrahim says that Alqamah was teaching a villager the words of Tashahhud, saying: "O Prophet, peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah." And the villager was saying: "O Prophet, peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and the blessings of Allah and the forgiveness of Allah." Upon this, Alqamah said: "We have been taught in this way."

Ibn Aun says that I heard Ibrahim teaching these words of Tashahhud: All verbal worship, financial worship, and physical worship are for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah’s servant and His messenger.

Hazrat Nafi' says that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not use to say these words between the two rak'ahs: Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.
