Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Uthman bin Abi Al-Aas narrates that the last thing the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a promise for was that a person should be appointed as a muezzin who does not take wages for giving the call to prayer.

Hazrat Dhahhak considered it undesirable for the muezzin to take wages for the call to prayer. However, if he receives it without asking, then there is no harm.

Hazrat Muawiyah bin Qurrah narrates that it was said: Only a sincere person should call the adhan for you.

Yahya Bakkā’ says that during Ṭawāf, I was holding the hand of Ḥaḍrat Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Meanwhile, a muezzin of the Kaʿbah met him and said, “I love you for the sake of Allah.” Ḥaḍrat Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied, “I hate you for the sake of Allah because you beautify your voice for the sake of obtaining dirhams.”
