Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Isa bin Abi Talha says that we were present in the company of Hazrat Muawiyah when the muezzin came and said, "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar." Hazrat Muawiyah responded in the same way. Then when he said, "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah," Hazrat Muawiyah also said the same. Then when he said, "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah," Hazrat Muawiyah also said the same. Then he said, "I heard your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying it in the same way."

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When you hear the muezzin, say what he says.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say the same words as the muezzin says.

It is also narrated in the same way from Hazrat Umm Habibah.

Hazrat Umm Habibah narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the voice of the muezzin, he would repeat the same words as the muezzin until he became silent.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Harith narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say the same words as the muezzin, except that in place of "Hayya 'ala-s-Salah" and "Hayya 'ala-l-Falah," he used to say "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah."

Hazrat Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would hear the voice of the muezzin, in response to "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah" and "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah," he used to say, "Wa ana, wa ana."

Hazrat Urwah narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say "Wa ana, wa ana" upon hearing the voice of the muezzin.

Hazrat Awza'i says that when Hazrat Mujahid heard "Hayya 'ala-s-Salah," he would say "Al-Musta'anu Allah" (Help is sought only from Allah), and when the muezzin said "Hayya 'ala-l-Falah," he would say "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah."

Ibrahim says that whoever says the words that the muezzin says, then for him is a reward equal to that of the muezzin.

Hasan says that when you hear the voice of the muezzin, say the same words that the muezzin says. However, when he says "Hayya 'ala-s-Salah," you should say, "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah." When he says "Qad qamatis salah," you should say these words: "O Allah! O Lord of this perfect call and the prayer that is to be established after it! Grant Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the Day of Resurrection that which he has asked of You." Whoever supplicates with this prayer at the time of Iqamah, Allah will include him in the intercession of the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the Day of Resurrection.

Hazrat Qatadah narrates that when Hazrat Usman heard the voice of the muezzin, he would repeat the same words as the muezzin during the tashahhud and takbeer. However, when the muezzin said "Hayya 'ala-s-Salah," he would say "Ma sha' Allah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah," and when the muezzin said "Qad qamatis salah," he would say: "Welcome to those who speak of justice and truth, and welcome to the prayer," and then he would stand up for the prayer.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Shaqiq says that a sign of hardness of the heart is that you hear the muezzin saying La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, but you do not respond to it.

Hazrat Abdullah says that a sign of the hardness of the heart is that you hear the voice of the muezzin but do not repeat the words that he says.
