Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Juhaifa narrates that Hazrat Bilal planted a spear and gave the call to prayer (adhan). I saw that he was turning around while giving the adhan.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that when the muezzin gives the call to prayer, he should face the Qiblah. He considered it undesirable for the muezzin to stand in the minaret and turn around. Hasan used to say that the muezzin will face the Qiblah. When he says "Hayya 'ala-s-Salah," he should turn, and when he says "Allahu Akbar," he should face the Qiblah.

Hazrat Mughira and Ibrahim say that the muezzin will not lift his feet from the ground.

Hazrat Abu Juhaifah narrates that I presented myself in the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the place of Abtah. Hazrat Bilal came to give the call to prayer (adhan); he gave the adhan in such a way that he turned his face to the right and to the left.

Ibrahim says that the muezzin will face the qiblah at the time of adhan, shahadah, and iqamah.

Hazrat Faid bin Bakeer says that I went with Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) to the mosque for the Fajr prayer. The muezzin of Walid bin Uqbah, Hazrat Ibn Al-Tayyah, was giving the adhan and was saying: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah. While giving the adhan, he was turning to the right and to the left. Upon this, Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Allah Almighty grants sustenance to whomsoever He wills through his voice.

Ibrahim, regarding the muezzin, says that he will join his feet together and face the qiblah. When he says "Qad qamatis salah," he will turn his face to the right and to the left.
