Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Mahdhurah narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me nineteen words for the Adhan and seventeen words for the Iqamah. The words of the Adhan were as follows: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah. The words of the Iqamah were as follows: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Qad qamatis salah, Qad qamatis salah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah.

Hazrat Nafi’ narrates that the adhan of Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) was as follows: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah (three times). I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (three times). Come to prayer (three times). Come to success (three times). Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah.

Muhammad says that the words of the adhan are: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Come to prayer, Come to prayer, Come to success, Come to success, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Hasan used to say that the words of the adhan are: Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya 'ala as-salah, Hayya 'ala al-falah. Then he would repeat these words and say: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya 'ala as-salah, Hayya 'ala al-falah (twice), Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah.

Hazrat Ibn Abi Mahzura narrates that Hazrat Abu Mahzura used to say the words of the adhan one by one in a low voice. Then when he reached "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah," he would return to "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah," and while saying these words twice, he would raise his voice. Then when he reached "Hayya 'ala as-salah," in the first adhan of Fajr, he would say "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm."

Once, an Ansari companion came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Last night, when I saw your concern and returned from your presence, I saw in a dream that a man was standing in the mosque and he was wearing two green garments. He gave the call to prayer (adhan), then he sat down once, then he gave the iqamah in the same way, except that in the iqamah there was the addition of the words 'Qad qamatis salah.' It seemed to me as if I was in a state between sleep and wakefulness." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Allah has shown you good." Hazrat Umar said, "I also saw the same thing in a dream, but I felt shy to mention it." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Order Bilal to give the adhan."
