Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the duration for wiping (over socks) is three nights for a traveler and one day and one night for a resident.

Hazrat Abdu Khair narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) performed masah (wiping) over the leather socks.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if religion were based on reason, then wiping over the underside of the foot would have been more deserving than the upper part, but I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the upper part of the foot.

Hazrat Abu Ubaidah says that I asked Hazrat Jabir about wiping over the socks, so he said that it is Sunnah.

Hazrat Iyaz bin Nazlah narrates that we went to a garden with Hazrat Abu Musa. He also went to relieve himself, and so did I. When I returned and began to take off my socks, he said, "Leave them and wipe over them. When you go to sleep, then take them off."

Hazrat Jabir bin Samurah says that if I do not take off my socks for three days, I do not mind it at all.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr says: You should wear these black socks; they are suitable for you to wipe (masah) over them.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin narrates that Hazrat Abu Ayyub used to instruct his companions to wipe over their socks.

Ibrahim says that Hazrat Jarir bin Abdullah used to wipe over the socks. Ibrahim used to say that I like this very much because Hazrat Jarir accepted Islam after the revelation of Surah Ma'idah.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab performed ablution after urinating and then wiped over his leather socks. It is as if I can still see the marks of his fingers on his socks.

Hasan says that wiping (masah) over the socks will be done by drawing lines with the fingers.

Hazrat Abu Alaa narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent us towards Siffin and appointed Hazrat Qais bin Sa'd, the servant of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as our leader. When we all reached Maskan, Hazrat Qais urinated, then performed ablution on the bank of the river Dijlah and wiped over his leather socks. I saw the marks of his fingers on his socks.

Hazrat Abu Uthman says that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Hazrat Sa’d had a difference of opinion regarding wiping over leather socks. Hazrat Sa’d used to say: Wipe over the leather socks.

Hazrat Aban bin Uthman narrates that I asked Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas about wiping over the socks, so he said that for a traveler it is three days and three nights, and for a resident it is one day and one night.

Hazrat Mutarrif reports that I went to Hazrat Ammar, and he was in the toilet. When he came out, he performed ablution and wiped over his socks.

Hazrat Abu Ayyub narrates that I saw Hasan returning from a funeral; he urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over his socks.

Hazrat Yahya bin Abi Ishaq narrates that Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about wiping over leather socks (khuffs), so he said: Wipe over them. The people asked: Did you hear this command from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: No. However, I heard this command from those companions who were free from accusation; they used to say that even if one has urinated or defecated, still wiping over the leather socks is permissible.

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib says that when you insert your feet into the leather socks in a state of purity, you may perform masah (wiping) over them for a full day if you are a resident, and for three nights if you are a traveler.

Hazrat Amr Jamal Aswad narrates that I asked Hazrat Salim about wiping over the socks, so he said that a traveler can wipe for three nights and a resident for one day and one night.

Hazrat Abdul A'la reports that I saw Ibn al-Hanafiyyah wiping over the leather socks (mash on the khuffs).

Ibrahim states that eight companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed masah (wiping) over the leather socks. They are: Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, Hazrat Ibn Mas’ud, Hazrat Abu Mas’ud Ansari, Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah, and Hazrat Bara’ bin Azib. (These are seven in total; in one version, Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is also mentioned, thus making the number complete to eight.)

A companion says that if I had felt any objection while wiping over the leather socks, I would not have considered it good to pray in them either.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Ibrahim was on a journey when a hot day came. He said, "If it were not against the Sunnah, I would have taken off my leather socks (moza)."

Hazrat Hasan bin Ubaidullah narrates that I saw Ibrahim, he urinated and then performed masah (wiping) over his leather socks. Then he entered the mosque and offered prayer.

Hazrat Hasan bin Ubaidullah says that I saw Hazrat Ibrahim Nakha'i and Hazrat Ibrahim bin Suwaid; their ablution broke, then they performed ablution and wiped (masah) over their socks.

Ibrahim Taimi narrates that I asked Harith bin Suwaid about wiping over the socks. He replied, "Wipe over the socks." I asked, "Even if I go to the toilet?" He said, "Even if you go ten times, you can still wipe over them."

Hazrat Asim narrates that Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) urinated, then performed ablution, and in it, he wiped over his turban and his socks.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you puts on socks in a state of purity of the feet, then a traveler may wipe over them for three days and a resident for one day.

Hazrat Asim narrates that Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) urinated, then performed ablution, and in it, he wiped over his turban and his socks.

Hazrat Saeed narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to wipe over the socks and also used to say that there is no doubt about it in my heart.

Hazrat Abu Abdur Rahman says that I was sitting with Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf when Hazrat Bilal passed by us. We asked him about wiping over leather socks (khuffs), so he said that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would return after relieving himself, we would present water to him. He would perform ablution, then wipe over his leather socks and turban.

Hazrat Bilal narrates that Muhammad (peace be upon him), Hazrat Abu Bakr, and Hazrat Umar used to wipe (perform masah) over socks and shawls.

Hazrat Naseer narrates that once Hazrat Saad bin Malik performed masah (wiping) over his leather socks, so Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) objected to this. And when he mentioned this matter to his father, he said that Saad bin Malik knows more than you.
