Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said (addressing the women) that instruct your husbands to use water after urinating or defecating, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do so. I feel shy to say this to men.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to instruct women to tell their husbands to perform istinja (cleanse themselves) with water after relieving themselves.

Hazrat Fari’ah (who was the wife of Hazrat Hudhaifah, may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Hudhaifah, may Allah be pleased with him, used to perform istinja (cleaning) with water.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would go towards the toilet, I and another boy of my age would carry a water vessel and a spear’s staff along with us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform istinja (cleaning) with water.

Hazrat Abu Najashi narrates that I was on a journey with Hazrat Rafi’ bin Khadij, and he used to perform istinja (cleaning) with water.

Hazrat Anas bin Sirin narrates that when Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) would enter the toilet, he would have a water vessel and soapwort herb brought to him.

Ibrahim reports that it has reached me that whenever the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the toilet, he would perform ablution or wash his hands with water.

Hazrat Abu Saeed, the freed slave of Abi Usaid, narrates that when Abu Usaid would go to the toilet, I would bring water for him and he would perform istinja (cleaning) with it.

Hazrat Mutarrif bin Abdullah narrates that a villager told me, "I have stayed with Abu Dharr, and I liked all his manners and habits except for one habit!" I asked, "Which habit is that?" He replied, "When he would come out of the toilet, he would perform istinja (cleaning) with water."

Hazrat Zuhri narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) performed istinja (cleaning) with water while sitting between two saddles, so the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to laugh and said, "He is performing ablution like a woman?"

Hazrat Yahya bin Abi Kathir states that Hazrat Anas used to perform istinja with the water of ushnan.

Hazrat Mujammi’ bin Ya’qub narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to ‘Uwain bin Sa’idah: “How do you attain purity for which Allah Almighty has praised you?” He replied: “We wash our private parts with water.”

Hazrat Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Salam narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Quba, he said: "Allah Almighty has praised your purity. What do you do?" On this occasion, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: __QUR_N__ "In this mosque are people who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves." __QUR_N__ The people of Quba replied, "O Messenger of Allah! We saw written in the Torah that istinja (cleansing after relieving oneself) is done with water."

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that when this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people of Quba! For what reason has Allah Almighty praised you?" They replied, "Among us, every person, when he comes out of the toilet, performs istinja (cleansing) with water." The verse is this: "In this mosque are people who love to remain pure, and Allah loves those who purify themselves."

Hazrat Abu Ja'far says that this verse was revealed about the people of Quba: In this mosque, there are people who are very mindful of keeping themselves pure; Allah Almighty loves those who keep themselves pure.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to the women that instruct your husbands to wash away the traces of excrement from their bodies; I feel shy to tell them this myself.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The people before you used to pass hard stools like camel droppings, and you pass soft stools, so after cleaning with a stone, use water as well.
