Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Ibrahim, regarding the woman who applies henna to her hands without ablution and then the time for prayer arrives, states that in order to perform the prayer, she must remove the henna from her hands.

Hasan says that when a woman wants to apply henna, it is better that she applies it during her menstrual period. If she applies henna in a state of purity, there is no harm in that either; she may apply it at bedtime. If her ablution breaks, she should remove the henna and perform ablution again.

Hazrat Abu Saeed says that a woman asked Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), "Can I offer prayer after applying henna?" She replied, "Remove it thoroughly and then offer prayer."

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that for prayer, remove henna thoroughly. I used to remove henna at the time of prayer, even though among all the girls, I used to apply henna the best.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that our women used to apply very good henna; they would apply henna after Isha and remove it before Fajr.

Hazrat Alqamah used to instruct women to apply henna during their menstruation days.

Once a woman sent someone to Hazrat Salim to ask this question: If a woman has applied henna and the time for prayer comes, what should she do? He replied: She should remove the henna, perform ablution, and then offer the prayer.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "It is more beloved to me that both my hands be cut off than that I wipe (do masah) over henna."

Hazrat Ata considered it better for a woman to apply henna during menstruation.
