Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Laqit bin Sabrah that I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Please teach me the method of ablution. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Perform ablution thoroughly, do khilal (pass fingers) between the fingers, and rinse your mouth well if you are not in the state of fasting.

Hazrat Mus'ab bin Sa'd narrates that once Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by some people who were performing ablution. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them, "Cleanse between your fingers."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Moisten the space between your fingers, otherwise the fire will burn it.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Clean between your fingers, otherwise the Fire will burn them."

Hazrat Imran bin Abi Ata says that I saw Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) performing ablution; he washed his feet and then, with great care, separated the toes of his feet and washed them as well.

Shaybah bin Nasaah says that I traveled with Qasim bin Muhammad up to Makkah. During ablution, he would insert the fingers of his hand between the toes of his feet and pour water over them. I asked him the reason for this, so he replied that he had seen Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) doing the same.

Hazrat Qasim says that he saw Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) during a journey, taking off his leather socks and performing khilal (passing fingers) between his toes.

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that clean between your fingers with water so that the fire may not burn them.

This statement of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is also transmitted through another chain of narration.

Hazrat Ikrimah says that when you perform ablution, begin with the fingers. Because it is said that the fingers are the abode of Satan.

Hazrat Abdul Ala reports that I saw Ibn al-Hanafiyyah performing khilal (passing fingers through each other) of the fingers during ablution.

Hasan al-Basri says: Clean between your fingers with water so that the fire that burns dry parts does not touch them.

Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Clean between your fingers so that Allah the Exalted may protect them from the Fire."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is the matter with those who perform khilal (cleaning between fingers and teeth)! You should perform khilal of your fingers with water and also perform khilal of your teeth after eating.
