Hadith 9267
٩٢٦٧ - حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن سماك عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "لا تصوموا قبل رمضان، صوموا لرؤيته وأفطروا لرؤيته، فإن ⦗٥٠٠⦘ حالت دونه (غياية) (١) فكمِّلوا ثلاثين" (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not fast before Ramadan. Begin fasting upon sighting the crescent of Ramadan, and celebrate Eid upon sighting the crescent of Shawwal. If clouds prevent you from seeing the crescent, then complete thirty days.
