Hadith 40158
٤٠١٥٨ - حدثنا ابن عيينة عن الزهري عن سنان بن أبي سنان عن أبي واقد الليثي أن رسول اللَّه ﷺ حين أتى حنينا مر بشجرة يعلق المشركون بها أسلحتهم يقال لها ذات أنواط، فقالوا: اجعل لنا ذات أنواط، فقال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "هذا كما قال قوم موسى لموسى: اجعل لنا إلها كما لهم آلهة، لتركبن سنن من (١) قبلكم" (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Waqid Al-Laithi that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hunain, he passed by a tree near which the polytheists used to hang their weapons, which was called Dhat Anwat (Anwat is the plural of Naut, which means something that is hung for a need; this was the tree on which the polytheists used to hang their weapons and stay around it). The noble companions said, "Make for us a Dhat Anwat." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is just like when the people of Musa (peace be upon him) said to Musa (peace be upon him), 'Make for us a god just as they have gods.' Surely, you will follow the ways of those before you."
