Hadith 40037
٤٠٠٣٧ - حدثنا علي بن مسهر عن الشيباني عن عبد اللَّه بن المخارق بن سُلَيم عن أبيه قال: قال علي: إني لا أرى هؤلاء القوم إلا ظاهرين عليكم (لتفرقكم) (١) ⦗٢٤١⦘ عن حقكم واجتماعهم على باطلهم، كان الإمام ليس (بشاقٍ) (٢) (شعرة) (٣)، وإنه يخطئ ويصيب، فإذا كان عليكم إمام يعدل في الرعية ويقسم بالسوية فاسمعوا له وأطيعوا، وإن الناس لا يصلحهم إلا إمام بر أو فاجر، فإن كان برا فللراعي وللرعية، وإن كان فاجرا عبد فيه المؤمن ربه وعمل فيه الفاجر إلى أجله، وإنكم ستعرضون على سبي، وعلى البراءة مني، فمن سبني فهو في حل من سبي، ولا تبرؤا من ديني فإني على الإسلام (٤).
It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I think regarding these people that they will overpower you because of your disagreement on the truth and their unity on falsehood. And an Imam is not one who tears apart wealth; indeed, he makes mistakes and also attains correctness. So if such an Imam is appointed over you who does justice among the subjects and distributes equally, then listen to him and obey him. And indeed, no one reforms the people except the Imam, whether he is righteous or wicked. So if he is righteous, he is a guardian for himself and for the subjects, and if he is wicked, then during his time the believer will worship his Lord and the wicked will act until his appointed time. And indeed, soon you will be asked to speak ill of me and to disassociate from me. Whoever spoke ill of me, it is permissible for me to speak ill of him as well, but do not disassociate from my religion, for I am upon Islam.
