Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from Zaid that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to Hazrat Muhammad bin Maslamah, asking him to come to him, and sent a message saying that if he did not come to me, then bring him by force. The messengers sent by Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Hazrat Muhammad bin Maslamah, but he refused to go to them. They said, "We have been ordered that if you do not go, we should take you to him by force." Hazrat Muhammad bin Maslamah said, "Return to him and say: 'Your cousin, my beloved (peace and blessings be upon him), advised me that soon there will be tribulations, divisions, and disagreements. When this happens, stay in your house and break your sword, until either decisive death or a forceful hand comes to you. O Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), fear Allah, and do not let it be that this is the forceful hand that errs.'" (The messengers sent by Hazrat Ali) went to him and informed Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said, "Leave him."
