It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed the captives at the place of Ji’ranah, he gave captives to the Quraish and others, but from among those captives, he did not give anything to the Ansar companions. Many things were said and spread about this, until someone said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), you have joined your own people.” The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a messenger to Hazrat Sa’d bin Ubadah and inquired, “What is this that has reached me from your side, which they are saying so much?” The narrator says: He replied, “Surely, something must have happened which has reached you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “What do you say about it?” He replied, “I am only one individual from my people.” The narrator says: The anger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) increased, and he said, “Gather your people, and let no one else (from another tribe) be with them.” The narrator says: Hazrat Sa’d gathered the Ansar in one enclosure among the enclosures of the captives, and he himself stood at the door of that enclosure, and whoever came from his people, he allowed them (to enter), and he also allowed some of the Muhajireen (to enter), and sent some back. The narrator says: Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and anger was apparent on his blessed face. He said, “O group of Ansar! Did I not find you astray, and then Allah guided you?” The Ansar said, “We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger.” “O group of Ansar! Did I not find you poor, and then Allah made you rich?” The Ansar said, “We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).” “O group of Ansar! Did I not find you (mutually) enemies, and then Allah joined your hearts together?” The Ansar said, “We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Why do you not answer?” The Ansar said, “Allah and His Messenger are greater benefactors.” Then, when the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) (state of anger) subsided, he said: “If you wished, you could have said, and you would have spoken the truth, and you would have been believed: ‘Did we not find you expelled, and then we gave you shelter? And did we not find you denied, and then we affirmed you? And did we not find you poor, and then we supported you? And did we not find you helpless, and then we helped you?’” At this, the Ansar began to weep and said, “Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are greater benefactors and more virtuous.” “Have you felt something about this worldly thing which I gave to a people so that I could strengthen them in Islam… and I entrusted you to your Islam (meaning you are firm in faith)? If all people were to walk in one valley or mountain pass, and you Ansar were to walk in another valley or mountain pass, surely I would walk in your valley or mountain pass. You are like the inner garment close to the body, and the rest of the people are like the outer garment. And if there had been no migration, I would have been one of the Ansar. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands until the part under his shoulders (armpits) became visible, and he prayed: ‘O Allah! Forgive the Ansar, and forgive the children of the Ansar, and forgive the children of the children of the Ansar. Are you not pleased that other people take away sheep and camels, and you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah?’” At this, all the companions began to weep until their beards became wet, and they returned saying, “We are pleased with Allah as our Lord and with the share and portion of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).”
