It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that in the year of the conquest of Makkah, the Banu Khuza'ah killed a man from Banu Laith in retaliation for one of their own who had been killed by Banu Laith (at some time). This news was conveyed to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so he mounted his ride and delivered a sermon. He said: Verily, Allah the Exalted protected Makkah from the people of the elephant, and He made His Messenger and the believers prevail over it (for battle). Beware! This Makkah was not made lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be made lawful for anyone after me. Beware! It was made lawful for me only for one hour of the day. Beware! Even in this hour, Makkah is sacred. Its thorn shall not be cut, nor shall its trees be cut, nor shall its lost property be picked up except by one who announces it. And whoever has had someone killed from him, he has two options: either he retaliates by killing, or the family of the slain accepts blood money. The narrator says: Then a man named Abu Shah came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Messenger of Allah, write this down for me. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said (to the companions): Write it down for Abu Shah. Then a man from the Quraysh said: O Messenger of Allah, except for the idhkhir (a type of grass), for we use it in our homes and graves. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes, idhkhir is excepted.
