Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the first person to keep a dog was Hazrat Noah. He said, "O my Lord! You have commanded me to build the ark. I work on the ark all day, but at night they come and ruin it. Whatever work I do, they spoil it. My task has become very prolonged for me!" Allah Almighty sent revelation to Hazrat Noah, saying, "O Noah! Keep a dog for the protection of your ark." Hazrat Noah kept a dog. Hazrat Noah worked during the day and slept at night. When the disobedient people of his nation came at night to damage the ark, the dog started barking. Upon this, Hazrat Noah woke up and attacked them, causing all of them to flee. In this way, Hazrat Noah succeeded in his purpose.
