Hadith 38470
٣٨٤٧٠ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن علي بن زيد عن الحسن (١) أن ثلاثة علماء اجتمعوا فقالوا لأحدهم: ما أملك؟ قال: (ما) (٢) يأتي ⦗١١٦⦘ عليَّ شهر إلا ظننت أني (أموت) (٣) (فيه) (٤)، قالوا: إن هذا (الأمل) (٥)، فقالوا للآخر: ما أملك؟ قال: ما تأتي عليَّ جمعة إلا ظننت أني أموت فيها، قالوا للثالث: وما أملك؟ قال: وما أملُ من نفسه بيد غيره.
Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said that three scholars gathered together and they asked each other, "How much hope do you have?" One replied, "I think I will live for one month and then die." They said, "This is a great hope." Then they asked the second, "How much hope do you have?" He replied, "I think I will live until one Friday and then die." They asked the third, "What is your hope?" He replied, "What hope can a person have whose very soul is in someone else's possession?"
