Hadith 36934
٣٦٩٣٤ - حدثنا عبد اللَّه بن نمير وأبو أسامة عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد عن قيس عن عبد اللَّه قال: بينما رجل ممن كان قبلكم كان في قوم كفار، وكان فيما بينهم قوم صالحون، قال: (فطالما) (١) كنت في كفري (هذا) (٢) (لآتين) (٣) هذه القرية الصالحة، فأكونن رجلا من أهلها، فانطلق فأدركه الموت فاحتج فيه الملك والشيطان، يقول: هذا أنا أولى به، ويقول: هذا أنا أولى به، إذ (قيض) (٤) اللَّه (لهما) (٥) بعض جنوده فقال لهما: قيسوا ما بين القريتين، فأيتهما كان أقرب إليها فهو من أهلها، فقاسوا ما بينهما فوجدوه أقرب إلى القرية الصالحة فكان منهم (٦).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that in the previous nations before you, there was a man among a people of disbelievers, and among them were some righteous people as well. That man said: "I will surely go to that righteous town so that I may also become one of the righteous." He set out to go to that town, but death overtook him. Regarding him, there was a dispute between an angel and Satan; one said, "I am more deserving of him," and the other said, "I am more deserving of him." Allah Almighty decided between them through some of His armies. He said to them, "Measure the distance between the two towns; whichever town he is closer to, he will be counted among them." They measured the distance and found him closer to the town of the righteous, so he was counted among them.
