Hazrat Abu Rafi’ says that Hazrat Umar used to recite one hundred verses of Surah Al-Baqarah in the Fajr prayer, and along with them, he would add a surah from the Mathani or recite something from the beginning of the Mufassal. And if he recited one hundred verses of Surah Aal-e-Imran, he would also add a surah from the Mathani or recite something from the beginning of the Mufassal. The surahs from Surah Al-Hujurat to the end of the Qur’an are called “Mufassal.” There are three types of “Mufassal”: long, medium, and short. The long Mufassal are from Surah Al-Hujurat to Surah Al-Buruj, the medium Mufassal are from Surah At-Tariq to Surah Al-Bayyinah, and the short Mufassal are from Surah Al-Qadr to Surah An-Nas. In the mentioned narration, “from the beginning of the Mufassal” refers to the surahs of the long Mufassal.
