Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Zubyan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were with Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) in a battle—either the Battle of Jalula or the Battle of Nahavand. He says that a man passed by us who had picked some fruits, and he began to distribute them among his companions. When Hazrat Salman passed by, he rebuked him. That man, not recognizing Hazrat Salman, also spoke harshly to him. When he was informed that this was Hazrat Salman, he went to him to apologize. Then someone asked Hazrat Salman, "O Abu Abdullah! What is permissible for the dhimmis?" Hazrat Salman replied, "Three things: Until they are guided from your misguidance, until they become wealthy from your poverty—when any of these is with you, you may partake of his food and he of yours, and you may ride his mount (and he yours), and if he wishes, do not turn your face away from him."
