Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Ikrimah narrates from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I asked Hazrat Ka’b, “How was Hazrat Idris (peace be upon him) raised up?” He replied: The meaning of Hazrat Idris (peace be upon him) reaching a high place is that he was a pious servant; his good deeds would reach the heavens in such abundance that they equaled the deeds of all the people of that time. The angel to whom these deeds were brought was astonished. He sought permission from Allah, saying, “O Allah, grant me permission to visit Your servant.” Allah granted him permission. The angel came and said to him, “O Idris, rejoice! So many of your good deeds reach the heavens that they surpass the deeds of all the people of the earth.” He asked, “How do you know this?” The angel replied, “I am an angel.” He said, “Even if you are an angel, how do you know this?” The angel said, “I am appointed at the gate through which your deeds ascend.” He said, “Can you intercede with the Angel of Death for me, so that my death may be delayed and I may offer more gratitude and worship?” The angel replied, “Allah does not delay the death of any person when its time comes.” He said, “I know this, but it would bring me great joy.” So the angel lifted him on his wing and took him to the heavens and said, “O Angel of Death, this is a pious servant and prophet, and so many of his good deeds ascend to the heavens that none of the people of the earth can match them. I liked this very much, and after seeking Allah’s permission, I came to him. When I gave him this glad tidings, he asked me to intercede for him so that his death might be delayed and he could offer more gratitude and worship to Allah.” The Angel of Death asked, “Who is he?” The angel replied, “Idris (peace be upon him).” So the Angel of Death looked in his register, and when he reached his name, he said, “By God, there is no time left in the life of Idris (peace be upon him),” and erased his name. Thus, he passed away there.
