Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Muhammad bin Abdur Rahman bin Sa’d bin Zurarah narrates that I heard my uncle Yahya … I have not found anyone among us resembling him … narrate that Hazrat Sa’d bin Zurarah developed a disease in his throat which is called “dhabh” (inflammation). The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “I will surely present an excuse regarding Abu Umamah, or he said: I will surely test him.” So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, cauterized him with his own hand, and he passed away. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “This (incident) is a bad death for the Jews, they will say, ‘Why did Muhammad not remove the suffering from his companion?’ whereas I do not even have control over my own soul.”
