Hadith 22673
٢٢٦٧٣ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن أبي شبيب (١) عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس أن (عمر) (٢) كاتب عبدًا له يكنى أبا أمية، فجاءه بنجمه حين جاء فقال: يا (أبا) (٣) أمية استعن به في مكاتبتك، فقال: يا أمير المؤمنين، لو تركته حتى يكون في آخر نجم، قال: إني أخاف أن لا أدرك (ذلك) (٤) ثم قرأ: ﴿وَآتُوهُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي آتَاكُمْ﴾ (٥).
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made his slave, whose kunyah was Abu Umayyah, a mukatab. When he came with the installment of the contract of manumission, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: O Abu Umayyah! Seek help in paying your contract of manumission. He replied: O Commander of the Faithful (may Allah be pleased with you)! If you allow me to wait until the last installment (it would be better). Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I fear that you may not be able to pay it. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the verse of the Holy Qur’an { وَآتُوہُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللہِ الَّذِی آتَاکُمْ }. Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this was the first installment of a contract of manumission that was paid in Islam.
