Hadith 16723
١٦٧٢٣ - حدثنا حفص عن ابن جريج عن عطاء قال: كان رسول اللَّه ﷺ إذا خُطب (أحدٌ) (١) من بناته جلس إلى جنب خدرها فقال: "إن فلانًا يخطب فلانة" فإن سكتت زوجها وإن طعنت بيدها -وأشار حفص بيده السبابة- أي (يقول في فخذه) (٢) لم يزوجها (٣).
Hazrat Ata says that when a marriage proposal would come for any daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), he would sit near her private chamber and say, "So-and-so has sent a marriage proposal for so-and-so." If she remained silent, he would arrange the marriage, and if she pricked her hand, he would not arrange her marriage. While narrating this, the narrator Hazrat Hafs pricked his index finger into his thigh.
