Hadith 15654
١٥٦٥٤ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن رباح بن أبي معروف عن عطاء عن ابن عباس قال: من شاء عرف ومن شاء لم يعرف، إنما كانوا يعرفون مخافة السرق (١).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says that whoever wishes may mark (the animal), and whoever wishes may not mark it. Indeed, people mark the sacrificial animal out of fear of it being stolen.
