The conqueror of Persia, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited me during the Farewell Pilgrimage when I was suffering from such pain that I was close to death. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! You know the pain I am experiencing, and I am a wealthy man, and I have no heir except one daughter. Should I give away two-thirds of my wealth in charity?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No.” I said, “Half?” He said, “No.” He said, “Give away one-third, and one-third is much.” If you leave your heirs wealthy, that is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. And whatever you spend for the pleasure of Allah, you will be rewarded for it, even for the morsel you put in your wife’s mouth. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Will I be left behind by my companions?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If you are left behind (i.e., remain alive) and do such deeds by which Allah’s pleasure is sought, your rank will be elevated and raised. And perhaps you will remain alive so that some people will benefit from you and some will be harmed.” O Allah! Complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels, but poor Sa’d bin Khawlah! The narrator said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed sorrow for him because he died in Makkah.
